Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 7, 2026

All your data stays on your device. Dumbphone stores everything locally using SwiftData. There are no analytics, no advertising, no servers, and no third-party tracking. Optional iCloud sync keeps your profiles in your private iCloud account.

1. Introduction

Dumbphone is a digital minimalism app for iOS that replaces your home screen with a text-based launcher and helps you build intentional phone habits. The app is designed with privacy as a core principle: it works 100% offline, stores your data locally on your device, and never transmits data to external servers. This privacy policy explains what data the app stores, how it is used, and your rights regarding that data.

2. What Data We Store

Dumbphone stores the following data that you create through normal use of the app:

  • Profiles: Name, accent color, active/inactive state, friction type, friction intensity, launcher appearance preferences, commitment message.
  • Schedules: Start/end times, active days (weekday/weekend/custom), profile association.
  • Launcher Items: App labels, sort order, profile association.
  • App Preferences: Active profile selection, launcher style, friction level, onboarding state.
  • Widget Settings: Font, size, spacing, alignment, text color, background style per profile.

All of this data is created by you through your use of the app. Dumbphone does not collect data from external sources or third parties.

3. Screen Time API

Dumbphone uses Apple's Screen Time API (FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, DeviceActivity) to provide app blocking and friction features. Important details:

  • Dumbphone uses individual authorization (.individual), not parental controls. You block apps on your own device, for yourself.
  • App selection tokens (which apps you choose to block) are opaque identifiers provided by Apple. Dumbphone cannot see app names or bundle identifiers from these tokens.
  • Tokens are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. They are device-specific and cannot be synced.
  • Blocking configurations are managed through Apple's ManagedSettingsStore, which persists on your device.
  • No usage data is transmitted to any server. All Screen Time processing happens on-device.
  • You can revoke Screen Time authorization at any time via Settings > Screen Time.

4. How Data Is Stored

Your data is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. Data is shared between the main app and its extensions (widgets, shield, monitor) through a secure App Group container on your device. This data never leaves your device unless you enable iCloud sync.

5. Optional iCloud Sync

If you enable iCloud sync, your profiles and launcher items are synced to your private iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit service:

  • Private Database: All synced data is stored in your private CloudKit container. Only you can access it.
  • Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple.
  • The developer of Dumbphone cannot read, access, or view your synced data.
  • Screen Time tokens are NOT synced — they are device-specific and remain local.
  • iCloud sync is optional and can be disabled at any time in the app's settings.

Apple's own privacy policy applies to iCloud storage: apple.com/privacy

6. What We Do Not Collect

Dumbphone does not use or include:

  • Analytics SDKs (no Firebase, no Mixpanel, no Google Analytics)
  • Crash reporting SDKs (no Crashlytics, no Sentry)
  • Advertising frameworks or identifiers
  • Location services
  • Access to contacts, photos, or camera
  • Third-party data sharing of any kind
  • Cross-app or cross-site tracking
  • User accounts, registration, or login

No data is sent to any server other than Apple's iCloud infrastructure (only if you opt into sync).

7. Data Deletion

You have full control over your data:

  • Delete individual profiles within the app. Associated schedules, launcher items, and blocking configurations are automatically removed.
  • Uninstalling the app removes all local data from your device and clears all app-blocking configurations.
  • Revoking Screen Time authorization in Settings > Screen Time removes all blocking rules immediately.
  • If you used iCloud sync, synced data persists in your iCloud account until you manually delete it through iCloud settings.

8. Wellness Disclaimer

Dumbphone is a general wellness and productivity tool for intentional phone use. It is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition. If you have concerns about your relationship with technology, consult a qualified professional.

9. Children's Privacy

Dumbphone is designed for adults who want to manage their own phone habits. The app uses individual Screen Time authorization (not parental controls). It does not require accounts, registration, or personal information. There are no social features or user-generated content.
